Project at a Glance : 

This project is designed to help students in the EMS program learn about what skills make good employees, based on the OAISD SkillSense portfolio and Skills4Success.  The project is created with the intention of being transferable to all programs at the Careerline Tech Center.
       
 
Driving Question:


How can we showcase our students' employability and professional skills to future employers?

Entry Event:
  • Students will be given six resumes and only two minutes to sort them.  Challenge: Choose the top two people based on the resume with the understanding that teamwork is a key value.  Then they will use DOT voting to compare their results with everyone.

  • EMS Students, CTC instructors, CTC students, Employers, WBL, CTC, Advisory Boards, Paras, victims, victims’ families, and Student’s families

  • Hopes/Fears/Norms

  • Reflect on the Stakeholder information
  • Interactions with industry professionals, especially HR personnel at LIFE EMS and AMR​​

  • Idea Quota - protocol to generate solution ideas
  • Anti-Problem  - protocol - What would it look like if a job candidate WASN’T a team player? Create skits based on protocol results
  • Mind-Mapping

  • Gallery Walk - featuring posters/Anchor Docs
  • Speed Dating- allows students to check in with peers.

  • Students will use ideas from the Mind Mapping activity to create their final product.

Final Presentation:
  • Part one: Individual Sessions - Mind-mapping share out
  • Part two:  Cumulative - Optional 60 second “interview” with advisory members, followed by updating/creating resume/portfolio
  • Create a video and resume for an interview​

Reflection and Feedback:
  • The SkillSense rubric
  • Revisit the resume entrance event and use what they’ve learned to re-evaluate their choices.  Would they hold? Or will they choose to revise based on project experience?

Meet the Educators:

​Betsi Roelofs taught math at the high school level for 21 years and now is an instructional coach at the Careerline Tech Center.

Kim Schrader has been a paramedic for 27 years and has worked at the Careerline Tech Center for the last 15 years, first as a paraprofessional and then as the lead instructor. ​
