Standards:
  • HS - LS 1 -2 &  1- 3

Team / Culture Building:

  • Teams will include a designated medical instructor, communication/PR person, child-life specialist, and data entry person.

Stakeholders:
  • Hospital workers including doctors and nurses
  • Burn patients and their families
Empathy Building:
  • Students will create an  Empathy Map (including Pains and Gains) on Padlet, while putting themselves in the shoes of someone experiencing a burn injury.

Inquiry / Need to Knows:
  • Next, students will use Stormboard or Padlet to break apart the driving question; using prior knowledge, and making predictions about what they will need to know to solve the problem.
  • Students will create a Concept Map visualizing the nature of burn patient therapy.
Picture
Incubation:
  • Students will engage in the Tell it to a Toddler Strategy and use Talking Chips to share the knowledge they have gained.

  • Incorporate a Fish Bowl discussion and the Anti-Problem protocol to generate solution ideas.

Solution Building:
  • Students will share their solution ideas and use Dot Voting to narrow down them down.
  • Next, they will use the NUF and $100 Tests to determine the best solution/s to the driving question.  Groups will share the results of their NUF test with a specialist in the field to get feedback.
Critique and Revision:
  • Using Flipgrid videos students will share their ideas during a Gallery Walk and get feedback from other groups.
  • Feedback will be given throughout the project from guest speakers, medical professionals, and the teacher.

Meet the Educator:
Sarah Kapenga teaches Biology and Anatomy at Hamilton High School.

"The Design Thinking structure gave me the tools I needed to take my project from "I think this could be good" to "I'm confident that I can walk my students through the steps of PBL, and their results will WOW me."
