Project at a Glance:

This project was meant to help students make an impact on their local communities, practice their problem solving and leadership skills.

Driving Question:

How can we have the most impact on our

Standards:
  • Act as a responsible and contributing citizen and employee (Career Ready Practice I.A.1)
  • Communicate clearly, effectively, and with reason (Career Ready Practice I.A.4)
  • Demonstrate creativity and innovation (Career Ready Practice I.A.6)
  • Employ valid and reliable research strategies (Career Ready Practice I.A.7)
  • Model integrity, ethical leadership, and effective management (Career Ready Practice I.A.8)
Team / Culture Building:
  • Students got to choose their mini-teams, and the class did  a would you rather ice breaker question at the beginning of each class to build culture. ​​

Stakeholders:

Empathy Building:
  • Students created Empathy Maps for different parts of the community make-up. 
Inquiry / Need to Knows:
  • ​​ Students did sticky not brainstorm session where they added ?????
  • Students were assigned questions from the Need to Knows to investigate and present to their classmates.

Incubation:
  •  Students made a list of things in the community that have already been done as community service projects.
  • Students conducted interviews to get ideas from outside of our classroom. 
Checking in:
  • Check ins will occur at least every five class periods on our “FFA Day.”  We may check in more frequently. 
  • Use the snowball one-word activity as well as the emoji check in. ​

Solution Building:
  • Students used the Idea Quota protocol to generate solution ideas. 
  • After generating ideas students narrowed their solutions using the Saturate and Group strategy.
Critique and Revision: 
  • NUF Test
  • $100 Test
  • Students used the Rip, Slap, Pass protocol to revise solution ideas.​

Authentic Audience:
  • Local Farmers
Final Presentation:
  • Students created an appreciation dinner for their final presentation.  This involved purchasing, cooking, inviting, and decorating for the final event.​

Reflection and Feedback:
  • Students communicated with the stakeholders after the events to see what they would like changed/have done differently. 
  • Students received verbal feedback from the public at their event. They also completed a written reflection individually in class. ​​

Samantha Ludlam is a 9-12  Agriscience teacher and FFA advisor at Coopersville High School.
