Protocol Overview and Instructions: The Ottawa Area Intermediate School District’s (OAISD) futurePREP Program is the strategic implementation of our community’s vision that all students need (1) to graduate with two “transcripts” . . . academic skills and career readiness skills . . . and (2) a system for measuring their progress toward those goals, and (3) robust opportunities to attain them.
Educator Thoughts: Students worked on verbal presentation skills as well as verbal feedback. In groups they created diagrams and had to present to the rest of the class. The listening students then had to give feedback. It was challenging to keep all 30 focused the whole time. The successes came when students were able to modify their oration skills and their feedback comments.
The goal was for students to recognize judgement feedback vs. objective feedback. Students practiced recognizing the different types. Students had to reflect on what comments were helpful (for example: “I wonder what you could do to show the connection between those two things on your poster.”) and which were not (for example: I don’t like that.”)
Student Quote:
“When they tell me what they’d like to see more of on my poster, it helps me figure out how I can make it better.”
Teacher Quote: “This intentional communication instruction really curbed the (annoying) BLURTING. Students knew they were held accountable to their comments (intelligent ones and unintelligentones). Also, the presenters truly felt valued because it was more than, “Oh that’s nice.”
Meet the Educator:
Sarah Kapenga : I’m growing to love teaching S4S and implementing protocols. Students are hungry for this information. It increases engagement and equips them for life.
