Protocol Overview and Instructions:
The Ottawa Area Intermediate School District’s (OAISD) futurePREP Program is the strategic implementation of our community’s
vision that all students need (1) to graduate with two “transcripts” . . . academic skills and career readiness skills . . . and (2) a system
for measuring their progress toward those goals, and (3) robust opportunities to attain them.

Educator Thoughts:
One thing that I deal with at Flex is attempting to take emotion out of communication in order to communicate effectively. Many times students assume others are speaking of them or do not know how to take emotions out of communication. One strategy that I used was a discussion one on one with students and ask questions to them. The biggest challenge when having these conversations the student is typically charged up and has a hard time.
I am hoping to help students learn about effective communication as well as learn how control of their emotions within conflict.
Student Quote:
“I know I cannot control the other person, but it doesn’t make it any easier.”
Teacher Quote:
“Any decision made out of emotion will always come back and hurt you in the end. Prior to communicating when you are upset, take a day to let the emotions settle and think over what you want to say.

Meet the Educator:
Cody Buresh has been teaching Social Studies at Hamilton Flex for 8 years now and have been doing the Future Prep’d experiences for nearly 7 years now. I have created many PBLs as well as revamping our curriculum to try an incorporate skill for success as well as protocols that really enhance the learning experience for our students. I love giving students ownership of their learning through the design/creative thinking process. It is powerful and rewarding when as an educator you can step back and see real world skills come into play while learning at the same time. |
