Protocol Overview and Instructions:
One of the first things that you will want to do with your students prior to them beginning their investigations is helping them uncover what they already know and need to know in order to address the driving question they are presented with.
Need to Know Protocol Instructions
Educator Thoughts:
I used the Need to Know protocol with my Sociology students as they began a mini research project. Each group created a driving question that they work at solving. This worked as a great starting point as they began to do their research. I found it helpful as they started the project and it could be revisited throughout the process.
"It really helped our group to identify what information that we already had, and allowed us to focus more quickly on the information that we still needed."
Student Quote:
"Students had a clearer picture of what they needed to focus on as they researched and ultimately solved their question for the project."
Meet the Educator:
I am a Social Studies teacher at Hudsonville Freshman Campus and have been teaching for 23 years. Something that has rewarding to me has been the opportunity to work with Future Prep for 3 years. It has encouraged me to constantly be looking at ways that I might be able to incorporate PBL protocols or projects into my classes.
"It (PBL) is a way to put students in the drivers seat of their own learning and we the teachers become passengers that help give directions and watch what happens."
