Protocol Overview and Instructions:
Any product change, project plan, change management initiative requires assessment of and approach to working with stakeholders, a term we use to describe anyone who can impact a decision. Stakeholders often slow or block change; in other cases, they bust obstacles and accelerate progress. To increase your likelihood of success, check out this activity and identify your stakeholders to understand how they feel about your work.
Friend or Foe Protocol Instructions
Educator Thoughts:
I used the Friend or Foe protocol with Napoleon Bonaparte. I had students determine if Napoleon was a good or bad leader in France during the French Revolution. It was my first time using this protocol and it didn’t go as well as I had hoped. I would change up the protocol a bit to make it a little easier for students to use and understand. It helped make the French Revolution more interesting for my students and they appreciated not just learning about it through notes and reading articles. The success came with the short answer questions on the unit test, where students could better explain Napoleon’s role and importance in the French Revolution.
"This protocol helped my students to dig deeper than they did in the past and brought about an excitement about sharing with the class what they found."
Student Quote:
"This is way more fun than paper pencil busy work and I learned that Napoleon was like a rockstar/ celebrity during his reign."
Meet the Educator:
I am a Social Studies teacher at Hudsonville Freshman Campus and have been teaching for 23 years. Something that has rewarding to me has been the opportunity to work with Future Prep for 3 years. It has encouraged me to constantly be looking at ways that I might be able to incorporate PBL protocols or projects into my classes.
"It (PBL) is a way to put students in the drivers seat of their own learning and we the teachers become passengers that help give directions and watch what happens."
