Protocol Overview and Instructions:
The Empathy Map is a tool for emphatic target group analysis and helps users to perceive their own feelings better and to empathize with their own actions. The aim is to gain a deep insight into potential users by answering as many open WH questions as possible. Each interview or each test can be documented individually with an Empathy Map, in order to be able to create a persona from the findings.

Educator Thoughts:
This strategy was really successful in helping our students look at the driving question through the lens of one of our novel characters. The students were so reflective in thinking about what the characters were thinking, seeing, saying and doing. The only difficulty was we finished these novels a few weeks ago. Next time, I might have them do a “working version” of their empathy map that they could add to as they read the book.
"The students did an amazing job building empathy as they learned about different novel characters, each with unique disabilities."
Student Quotes:
"This helped us feel like we were in their shoes."
"We learned how it might feel living with a disability and gives us insight into how they feel, and interact when people might be mean."
