Protocol Overview and Instructions:
The purpose of a chalk talk is a way to promote discussion and awareness of issues and perspectives - silently. A chalk talk is also an excellent way to promote awareness of patterns and problems and to ensure that all voices are heard.
Chalk Talk Protocol Instructions
Educator Thoughts:
At first students struggled to get going with their chalk talk. I began writing statements responding to help model for each group what it could look like. From there, some teams had some insightful conversations that helped them explore their driving question. The most helpful and successful thing we did was for each student to have their own color of writing utensil to help them visually see each member’s contributions.
"I loved seeing all students become involved in a discussion. It took the pressure off of talking or talking in front of a group and allowed multiple conversations to take place simultaneously."
Student Quotes:
"I think chalk talk is a great way to share our ideas in class. I liked that I could construct my thoughts without being influenced by others. After I had shared my thoughts, it was nice to have a visual of others' thoughts. The talk allowed me to not only reflect on my thoughts but consider others. All and all I think chalk talk is a very productive way to share ideas in a classroom setting."
Meet the Educator:
My name is Erin Carmody, and I teach 7th grade PE, 8th grade Health, and 8th grade Guided Academics at Lakeshore Middle School in Grand Haven, Michigan. I have been involved with futurePREP’d since the summer of 2013 in iChallengeUth, iChallengeU, Watercooler Session, PREP’d 2020, and FUZE/Unite4Insight. These amazing experiences inspired me to get my masters in learning design and innovation in 2017 (Go Waves)! I enjoy the process... particularly investigation and ideation. I’m looking forward to learning alongside you and growing our PBL experiences! "The creative sequence allows for creativity to flourish and reach beyond typical ideas. Each protocol helps build, challenge, and expand upon learning! It truly helps learners dig into what they’re doing and showcase all the possibilities." |
