Protocol Overview and Instructions:

The Empathy Map is a tool for emphatic target group analysis and helps users to perceive their own feelings better and to empathize with their own actions. The aim is to gain a deep insight into potential users by answering as many open WH questions as possible. Each interview or each test can be documented individually with an Empathy Map, in order to be able to create a persona from the findings.

Educator Thoughts:

In our ceramics class, as students learn how to throw on the wheel we emphasize the phrase “You learn the work by doing the work.” There are many different strategies and processes for throwing a perfect pot, but you must try before getting anywhere.  Rather that create an empathy map on chart paper, we had a guest artist come in to spend the day in the studio, and had students teach our school principal. Mr. Scroggins our guest potter, threw pots, answered questions and engaged with the students. Then our school principal, Mr. Bosch came in to learn how to throw on the wheel.  Students helped to coach him through the process! They gained empathy by becoming the teacher, and seeing someone else in their shoes.

Meet the Educator:

I am Lisa Rilley and this is my 15th year teaching art, and my 5th year with Hamilton Community Schools. I have taught Y5 up to 12th grade in a sweeping variety of art courses!  My first 7 years of teaching were in alternative ed, and I also worked for Holland Public School and The Art Institutes. 

     "My passion for PBL came from already teaching a project based course.  PBL/Design Thinking gave me a foundation to use while helping my students unpack their creative destinations. The entire protocol guide gives structure to my tendency to be more abstract and random in my teaching style. This helps to honor my students who need and crave that structure."
