Pump House

Project at a Glance :

This is a project where 4th grade students will gain knowledge about Holland history and the connection Frank Baum (author of the Wonderful Wizard of Oz) has to our community. This project will take 12 weeks.

Driving Question:

How do we implement a hands on exhibit at the Pumphouse Museum that showcases the Wonderful Wizard of Oz and the connection Frank Baum has to the Holland area?
Standards:
  • 5.7-5.10 Research - Build knowledge through resources, extend, connect, and use evidence to communicate.
  • SL 5.1B/C Follow agreed upon rules for discussions and carry out assigned roles. Pose and respond to specific questions by making comments that contribute to the discussion.
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.4.4 Report on a topic or text, tell a story, or recount an experience in an organized manner, using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace
  • ​CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.4.6 Differentiate between contexts that call for formal English (e.g., presenting ideas) and situations where informal discourse is appropriate (e.g., small-group discussion); use formal English when appropriate to task and situation.

  • Using Chat GPT students will create profiles of themselves and share them with the class. They will also make summer screen savers on a template and share those out to learn about each other.

  • Students watched the Wizard of Oz movie. They wrote compare/contrast papers for the two.
  • Students got to visit the Michigan History Museum in Lansing, MI. They decided on likes/dislikes about the exhibits there with a "Chalk Talk".

  • Students created initial solutions using Chat GPT which were a great springboard for final solutions​​
  • A yellow brick road leading to the Frank Baum exhibit at the Pump House.
  • Frank Baum cut-out for photos and and easel interactive questions.  ​
  • Another part of the interactive exhibit will have figurines of Frank, Dorothy, Lion, Tinman, and other characters. Visitors can place them on a specific part of Holland, Michigan where there concepts were based on. ​

  • ​I always give time for students to talk to their authentic audience and often they ask if the can contact them via e-mail, etc. in the future because sometimes right after the pitch the adrenaline is pumping and they are not really in the best position to reflect at that time.

Meet the Educator:

​Mrs. Wollenzier will be teaching 4th grade this year at Lakewood Elementary. This is her 31st year of teaching. Prior to this year she has taught SAIL for three years, spent 13 years teaching middle school math and a variety of other grade levels. She has has been involved in PBL at a variety of levels over the last several years. She has participated in the summer IChallengeUth Middle School program, High School Academy, Elementary Academy, Alumni Connect, and this past summer facilitated the museum challenge PBL camp.

          "Go Big or Go Home! Often students are worried about constraints when learning or developing ideas. I love encouraging them to put these struggles behind them and to come up with ideas where there are no constraints. Design Thinking encourages students to all be heard, think big, and to not let anything stand in their way of creating the solutions they are passionate about."
